Summary

Ed Devlin's life is swirling the drain. His family is falling apart because of his uncle's death, and his best friend has abandoned him for the allure of a dangerous girl. Then he acquires type one diabetes. Ed must learn to handle his disease, forge new friendships, find his place in the labyrinth of high school, and determine how to fix his broken father. Ed manages with help from a boy who has seen his share of pain and through parallels of fate within "Macbeth". In the end, Ed comes through the other side of this struggle confident in his self--a person who is this side of normal.

Writer’s Note

THIS SIDE OF NORMAL is straight from the heart. It is a combination of my struggle after acquiring type one diabetes, and the universal quality of finding an identity in the cut-throat world of adolescence. This manuscript has been used in a "Book club" for children with type one and they attest to its truth. THIS SIDE OF NORMAL takes you inside how it feels to have diabetes and how it feels to come of age in today's world.
